The mining industry has a long tradition in Huettenberg. For example, in today's community back in pre-Roman times ferrum Noricum, because of its quality and, in particular, the highly esteemed "Noric iron," was mined. Traces of this rich history still exist today in the form of the historic blast furnaces in Heft or in the especially interesting show mines in the slightly higher located Knappenberg. Also inseparably connected with Knappenberg is the world-famous mountaineer Prof. Heinrich Harrer who has his own museum dedicated to him here.
