POP-HORN SECTION WORKSHOP
How do brass instruments work in pop music? What do pop producers want to hear? What does the song need? How does a horn section find the delicate balance between “intellectual” jazz and boring sustained tones?
Axel and Horst-Michael answer these and other questions in their workshops, providing insights into the work of a horn section in pop mode. Participants collaboratively work on brass arrangements for different styles/songs, exploring the nuances of teamwork and phrasing. The workshop also examines “Solo playing in pop music”: How does one improvise as a brass player over pop music? How much jazz is acceptable, and how can one sound interesting with minimal musical material? Additionally, Axel and Horst-Michael offer practical tips for trumpeters, saxophonists, and trombonists regarding instrument choice, microphone placement, in-ear monitoring, live and studio work, etc…
